Collagen has taken the beauty industry by storm! Everywhere you turn there are collagen powders, collagen popsicles and collagen fruit chews. But what exactly is collagen and why does it seem like everyone is sipping a collagen cocktail??
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies. It touts benefits beyond tighter skin and healthier hair. Beauty bloggers and foodies alike are catching on to the benefits of collagen and we’re here to break down exactly what collagen is and why you need it.
What is collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein, making up about 30%, in our bodies. It’s found in our skin, muscle, bones, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. Collagen is the “glue” that reinforces our hair, skin and nails.
What types of collagen are there?
There are at least 16 types of collagen, but 80-90% of the collagen in your body consists of types I, II and III. Collagen types I and III are most abundant in your hair, skin and nails. Collagen type II provides the basis for cartilage and is an important component of bone and joint health.
How does collagen impact my hair, skin and nails?
Collagen is a long-chain amino acid composed of individual amino acids found in nature. It’s found exclusively in animal tissue, especially bones and connective tissue. Over time, the epidermic (outer) layer of skin experiences elastosis, when the skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity. After the age of 25, collagen production typically declines by about 1% every year. By ingesting collagen, your body’s own production of collagen will be stimulated. This can lead to improved texture and elasticity of the skin, reduced fine lines and wrinkles, healthier hair and stronger nails.
How does collagen impact my joints health?
Similar to its effect on your hair, skin and nails, collagen provides a bio-available source of amino acids to your bones and joints. Studies have shown connections between collagen supplementation and reduced joint pain.
Can I get my collagen from food?
Certain foods will help support the production of collagen. Vitamin C has anti-oxidizing properties that stabilize the enzymes that break collagen down. It also helps to reduce free radicals that can lead to aging skin. The antioxidant properties of vitamin c and its role in collagen synthesis make vitamin C a crucial molecule for skin health. Foods rich in vitamin C include spinach, oranges and berries.
Supplementing with collagen
